Steve Trone

For significant contribution to the VSA and gliding:

Steve Trone (Melbourne Gliding): Steve in conjunction with the VSA, embarked on the OGN (Open Glider Network) project which was proposed in 2016, and endorsed in early 2017, the first phase being a proof of concept, with an initial plan to build 8 stations, 3 for a pilot hosting program, 3 for key gliding sites and 2 self-contained units for remote mountain locations.

As the project and technology evolved and with data sent from the first couple of sites grew, the project evolved.  As at the end of 2018, the remote stations were completed and the 8 base stations have been installed.  These Victorian stations have provided better than expected range with up to 200 km being achieved.

Steve spent many hours travelling throughout Victoria to all gliding clubs to install the equipment. He also had to work within budgetary constraints.  His effort has been extraordinary, and we are very appreciative of his time and knowledge which is of benefit to all glider pilots in our region.
